Earlier this week at Rough Trade NYC, we hosted a showcase of British music for this year’s CMJ music marathon. Longfellow, Spring King, MONEY and The Crookes played to a packed crowd and all had killer performances. We caught up with three of the bands before their set, and second in our three part series is an interview with The Crookes.
What have been the main highlights since forming The Crookes?
George: Playing sold out shows at The Leadmill in our hometown. Getting to visit Tokyo. Being the first band since Death Cab For Cutie to release three albums on Fierce Panda.
Daniel: Getting to visit New York is always a highlight, whether or not we play; travelling around America has always been a dream for me since I first read On The Road.
What does it mean to you to be representing the best of upcoming British music at the Music Is GREAT Britain showcase during CMJ?
G: It’s an honour to be on the line up for the Music is GREAT Britain showcase. I always like playing on these sorts of line ups, where British bands are billed together in a foreign country – something about our backs against the wall, small island mentality I think. The feeling of being part of a group of invaders. And it will be a homecoming of sorts for us having spent the past few weeks travelling around the West coast and Texas so we’ll be in celebratory mood!
What other bands are you excited to catch at the Music Is GREAT Britain showcase?
Tom: We’re looking forward to catching up with and watching Longfellow as they’re our label mates on Fierce Panda.
The Crookes dressed in Ben Sherman
Do you own a Ben Sherman shirt?
D: Yeah, I think we all do. Tom is wearing one in the ‘Maybe In The Dark’ video.
What do you think embodies British style or fashion? And do you have a certain style within the band?
D: We’ve always been described as quintessentially British and I think out style plays a big part in this. I think we have quite a smart, classic style.
If you could sit down for a pint with anyone – who would it be?
T: David Attenborough
What’s next for the Crookes?
We’re currently in Austin so we’re going for a Mexican Breakfast at a place called Juan In A Million.
